Liewe Mede-Inwoner
Daar was sommer buitengewoon baie verjaardae.
The ever-present danger of fire dictates that every resident of Huis Stilbaai is constantly alert to the urgency of complying with fire safety measures, officers of the Hessequa Fire Department said this month.
Speaking to residents at our monthly tea, Christiaan September and Arno Grebe outlined essential cautionary measures necessary to prevent a fire from starting and if started, to ensure swift and decisive action to minimize the threat.
Cautionary measures include:
* A familiarity with the workings of fire extinguisher cylinders in your flat or room. To activate the extinguishers, always follow the PASS rule:
• Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher,
• Aim the nozzle,
• Squeeze the nozzle and
• Sweep the nozzle over the base of the fire.
* Adhere to Huis Stilbaais evacuation procedures. Remain calm, move without delay along the known and practiced evacuation route to the nearest exit, follow instructions from your fire marshal while keeping verbal communication among yourselves to a minimum to clearly hear the marshals’ instructions, and do not turn back to fetch items left behind. Stick to the keep left rule as you move out of the building, so that fire fighters entering the building and keeping to the left, will have an unimpeded path ahead. When clear of the building, move to the arranged emergency assembly point, and remain there until everyone is accounted for.
* Never overload multiplugs. Only good value multiplugs fitted with an essential red light to warn of overloading at the main switch should be used. Warning signals when a wall plug is overloaded include fuses blowing, delayed charging of cellphones, and light electrical shocks from touching the plugged-in appliance. Upgrade your electricity or put in more plug points rather than risk overloading multiplugs, said Arno.
An historic first for Huis Stilbaai took place this month when the Annual General Meeting took place in our own recreation hall, instead of in Stilbaai’s community hall as in years past. After two years of Covid restrictions, it was also our first AGM to be held face-to-face, without masks. Welcoming the large attendance of residents, Hentie van Heerden, chairman of the governing committee, guessed that this was probably the first time in the history of Huis Stilbaai that so many residents attended an AGM.
In her opening address, Huis Stilbaai manager, Karlien, assured residents that with Jesus Christ as the Foundation of our home, no storms of life can shake us.
